Legionella in air conditioning
There is a renewed call for buildings in Auckland’s CBD to test their air-conditioning systems for the Legionella bacteria. Two buildings tested positive to the potentially life threatening bacteria, which can be harboured in air-conditioning cooling systems. Medical Officer of Health Dr Cathy Pikholz says they are working closely with managers of buildings in the immediate vicinity. She says the bacteria can travel very easily, depending on weather conditions. Dr Pikholz says there is only a small risk of infection, and so far there have been no cases of Legionnaires disease from the infected towers.
