Skin problem may need vet’s care
Dear Dr. Kimmey: We have a 3-month-old golden retriever. The skin around his eyes is crusty, and he is loosing his fur. His face, and lips seem very swollen and he has scabs all over his face. He doesn’t eat as much as we think he should. He still runs and plays but not like puppies should. Money is an issue. We have gotten his first set of shots, but now he has a problem with his skin. We tried putting Neosporin on it and cleaning it with witch hazel for the last five days but it’s getting worse. Do you have any idea what this is and suggestions on home remedies? Pamela Winters Dear Pamela: There are a few things that I would consider, but the condition you are describing sounds like Canine Juvenile Cellulitis (juvenile pyoderma, puppy strangles). First, I would perform a skin scraping and look at it under the microscope to rule out Demodex and Sarcoptic mange mites.
