Washington, Jan 5 (UNI) Pluck a few of someone’s hair, and four to six weeks later they would grow into skin– might sound something from a science fiction novel! The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI has been granted approval to produce artificial skin from patients’ own cells, giving a new hope to people with chronic wounds. ”We and euroderm GmbH have been given permission to grow dermal tissue for grafting onto chronic wounds such as open leg ulcers on diabetics patients,” said IZI researcher Gerno Schmiedeknecht. At present, chronic wounds are treated by grafting on the patients’ own skin, which is normally taken from the thigh. This leaves scars on both the thigh and the treated wound. ”If we produce this skin using the recently approved EpiDex technique instead, we can achieve the same chances of recovery without hurting the patient.

Dear Dr. Fox: I have a three-month-old German shepherd, and she has major dry-skin issues. The vet told me to give her two tablespoons of cottage cheese, and it should clear up. But it hasn’t. Is there anything else I can do to treat her at home, or does she need medication? K.M., BRICK, N.J. Dr. Fox says: This cottage-cheese cure is new to me. First, the pup should be tested for worms. When a young dog has a poor coat, examining a fecal sample for these internal parasites, which are extremely common in pups, is called for. Next, look at what kind of food you are giving her. Dry foods are notoriously low in essential fatty acids and often too high in carbohydrates. Your dog would probably benefit from a twice-daily, 500-mg capsule of fish oil placed in her food.

Dear Dr. Kimmey: We have a 3-month-old golden retriever. The skin around his eyes is crusty, and he is loosing his fur. His face, and lips seem very swollen and he has scabs all over his face. He doesn’t eat as much as we think he should. He still runs and plays but not like puppies should. Money is an issue. We have gotten his first set of shots, but now he has a problem with his skin. We tried putting Neosporin on it and cleaning it with witch hazel for the last five days but it’s getting worse. Do you have any idea what this is and suggestions on home remedies? Pamela Winters Dear Pamela: There are a few things that I would consider, but the condition you are describing sounds like Canine Juvenile Cellulitis (juvenile pyoderma, puppy strangles). First, I would perform a skin scraping and look at it under the microscope to rule out Demodex and Sarcoptic mange mites.

Grandmother always said you have to suffer for beauty. But Grandma didn’t know about Botox. If she had, she probably would have willingly sat as a weakened form of the Botulinum Toxin, a bacteria, was injected into areas of her face where signs of aging were becoming undeniable. Grandma would probably have laughed at first. Botulism is something she feared would ruin her canned peaches. The stuff can kill but it also has some amazing medical applications beyond the purely cosmetic treatment of wrinkles. As a matter of fact, the youthful looks patients receiving the injections for facial tics began to exude sparked a revolution in the battle against times effect on the face. Paralyzing facial muscles that twitched uncontrollably provided relief from the embarrassing and annoying tics and accidentally left patients looking younger as well.
