Mongolian gets 21 months for using stolen credit card

A MONGOLIAN national was found out when he used a woman’s stolen credit card to buy two items worth S$2,500 at a jewellery shop at VivoCity.  Dandar Enerel, 25, was sentenced to a total of 21 months on Monday for dishonestly receiving a stolen POSB Everyday MasterCard bearing the name of Yeo Jia Yeh and conspiring with a fellow Mongolian national to cheat at Aspial-Lee Hwa Jewellery at Harbourfront Walk on Dec 19.  A district court heard that Dandar and his accomplice named Bataa went to Sentosa that day after meeting up at Aljunied MRT station. While on their way out of Sentosa, the accomplice showed Dandar a DBS Gold Visa credit card and a POSB Everyday MasterCard which he had stolen from Ms Yeo Jia Yeh. Dandar kept them in his wallet.  The two went to Aspial Lee Hwa Jewellery at VivoCity and chose a diamond ring and a white gold bracelet totalling S$2,500.

Credit card fraud could rise in 2008

Dubai: The amount of money lost in credit card fraud in the Middle East could grow 20 per cent from Dh1.8 billion to about Dh2 billion this year, an industry official said.  Vendorcom Chairman Paul Rodgers said fraudulent transactions are one of the threats faced by the payment cards industry today and unless no appropriate measures are taken, the Middle East remains vulnerable to fraudsters.  “I wouldn’t say that the Middle East is completely unprotected, but it is a growing problem here. It’s inevitable that it will grow because other countries are securing their systems and so until the Middle East puts similar systems in place, it will be vulnerable,” Rodgers told Gulf News.  “In the UK, almost half a billion pounds are being lost every year on credit card fraud alone.
