For me, supporting animal rights is a no-brainer. After all, who could possibly be for being cruel to animals? It just doesn’t seem like a reasonable position! We have to do all we can to protect the rights of animals, people, and anything that can feel pain. The big debate is where animal protection should start.

Pueblo dog may have dug up long-missing man

Pueblo investigators say a human skeleton discovered by a pet dog may be the remains of a 45-year-old man who has been missing since 2001. Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor said Monday that a driver’s license and other identification indicate the man might be Mark Kaskel. Taylor says investigators are awaiting positive identification from DNA tests and other procedures. Searchers found the body under a trailer home on Friday, a week after the dog returned home with a human jawbone. Deputies arrested 47-year-old Charles Gross for investigation of second-degree murder. Deputies say Gross told them he shot a man in self-defense. Gross was jailed under $500,000 bail.

Police dog killer grins as handler tells of his loss

A Tauranga police dog handler told a court he was “shattered” by the senseless and deliberate killing of his dog by a fugitive on the run. Tauranga labourer Tairyn Murphy, 27, was jailed yesterday for 14 months for killing Constable Kayne Cording’s dog Enzo without lawful excuse. Judge Christopher Harding also sentenced Murphy in Tauranga District Court to one month in jail for resisting arrest. That term is to be served concurrently. On leaving the dock, Murphy smiled and waved to supporters calling out “love you cuz”.  Judge Harding said the deliberate drowning of three-year-old Enzo during a manhunt in the lower Kaimai Range in August had had a significant effect not only on the dog’s handler, but on the officer’s wife and young children as well as on Western Bay of Plenty police staff.
