Looking for math help can be embarrassing for some people. I had a lot of trouble finding a algebra tutor, but not because it was hard to find quality algebra help in my area. On the contrary, there are two very good colleges in the town I live in, and plenty of math tutors willing to pick up a few hours helping high school students do their homework. For me, however, it was difficult to admit that I needed help. None of my friends were going to algebra tutors, and I wanted to be having the same easy time that they were.

Affordable art can be easier to come by than you think. Most of us have had art posters in college, but few of us realize that we can have contemporary art for low prices. You can even find affordable framed art at many galleries. If you are a shrewd buyer, you can find works by talented artists made before they have become successful. These affordable artworks are not only great for use as decoration, but are also excellent investments. You can get years of joy out of an art work, and later retire off of it! I grant you that this is not the most common scenario. Most artists never become rich and famous, and talent is rarely recognized. Even so, there is nothing to brighten up your home like a beautiful piece of original artwork.

The state Board of Education on Thursday gave initial approval to a plan that would require students to pass a series of state-sanctioned tests before they can receive high school diplomas — a topic that has driven a wedge between many educators and Gov. Ed Rendell’s administration. The plan, which the board approved 11-0 with one member abstaining, would effectively create a system of rolling exit exams for Pennsylvania’s public high schools. Starting with the class of 2014 — this year’s sixth-graders — students would have to pass final examinations covering English, math, science and social studies. Schools would be required to provide remedial help for those who fail and give them opportunities to retake the tests so they can graduate. Proponents say the new requirement would ensure that students in all 501 school districts uniformly meet the state’s academic standards when they graduate, making them more likely to succeed whether they go to college or enter the work force after high school.
