As the owner of an electronics store specializing in audio equipment, I get asked all the time what the best computer speakers are. People are often surprised at my reply. I succeed in my business by trying to give honest answers and not automatically directing people to the most high-tech and sophisticated audio there is. As an honest salesman, I have to say there is no simple answer.

For decades now, people have been searching for cleaner alternatives to today’s methods of transportation. Air powered cars are just the newest idea to hit the market, but they seem promising. Previous ideas have failed to completely deliver on the idea of clean fuel. Hybrid engines are a good start, but they still involve internal combustion which pollutes the air. Electric cars are an even better idea, but they have run into some serious technical problems. Batteries are heavy and expensive, and the cars tend to not have a very good range or enough acceleration. Additionally, many of electric batteries pose serious problems when they have to be disposed of. Even hydrogen cars haven’t proven viable so far – although they still may yet.

Most people aren’t fortunate enough to live in a home with air conditioning, so they turn to the next best thing, a fan. Fans are wonderful inventions and within seconds of turning one on you can feel cool and refreshed. One of the few drawbacks to using a fan is that you typically need to have it close to an electrical outlet. If you’re in a spot where that’s not possible, it can be pretty discouraging. Design is the buzzword in consumer electronics. Consumers are getting more picky about how their gadgets look and what the devices say about their personality and style. Take for instance the notebook computer. Laptops are no longer the black and grey metallic boxes they once were, and hardware-makers are becoming more experimental and liberal in their design. Fujitsu’s Fabric Concept PC, showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month, is an example of a machine that tries to push the design envelope. Simulating a portfolio made of fabric with a display made of electronic paper, the notebook is soft and pliable not at all what you expect a notebook to be. The man responsible for such avant-garde designs, Mr Kenichi Kimura, the 37-year-old chief designer at Fujitsu’s Ubiquitous Solution Design department, was in Singapore last week.

If youve been living in a cave or have managed to avoid all news media for the past week or so, you may be unaware of the glitz-o-rama unfolding in Las Vegas that is the Consumer Electronics Show. This annual event attracts major manufacturers from around the world, eager to show off their latest/greatest/coolest products that will be available shortly, as well as their bug-infested concepts, some of which are available now to those with big egos and deep pockets. To illustrate the show’s importance, last years hit was the iPhone, which became the must-have fashion accessory this year. Screens are part of the big story this year. TV screens are larger, thinner, lighter, greener, and are no longer the energy hogs they were when first introduced. The largest is a 150-inch behemoth from Panasonic.
