Credit card fraud could rise in 2008
Dubai: The amount of money lost in credit card fraud in the Middle East could grow 20 per cent from Dh1.8 billion to about Dh2 billion this year, an industry official said. Vendorcom Chairman Paul Rodgers said fraudulent transactions are one of the threats faced by the payment cards industry today and unless no appropriate measures are taken, the Middle East remains vulnerable to fraudsters. “I wouldn’t say that the Middle East is completely unprotected, but it is a growing problem here. It’s inevitable that it will grow because other countries are securing their systems and so until the Middle East puts similar systems in place, it will be vulnerable,” Rodgers told Gulf News. “In the UK, almost half a billion pounds are being lost every year on credit card fraud alone.
