Edward J. McBride Jr., a retired police officer who now works for Ocean County, was installed on the Board of Education Thursday night, succeeding a member who was elected to the Township Council.

McBride, 53, of Toledo Drive, was appointed by the board over three others considered for the post. McBride works for the county Department of Consumer Affairs as an assistant public affairs officer. “I spent my entire life, basically, in public service,” he said. He was a school traffic safety officer in North Plainfield, retiring at the rank of sergeant. He also served on the North Plainfield Parking Authority. McBride said there is a gap in pedestrian safety around schools. He also said he wanted to get involved in politics and that the board is a “somewhat political entity.” McBride said he will seek election to the seat he holds in April.
