Think outside the metal box
Design is the buzzword in consumer electronics. Consumers are getting more picky about how their gadgets look and what the devices say about their personality and style. Take for instance the notebook computer. Laptops are no longer the black and grey metallic boxes they once were, and hardware-makers are becoming more experimental and liberal in their design. Fujitsu’s Fabric Concept PC, showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month, is an example of a machine that tries to push the design envelope. Simulating a portfolio made of fabric with a display made of electronic paper, the notebook is soft and pliableĀ not at all what you expect a notebook to be. The man responsible for such avant-garde designs, Mr Kenichi Kimura, the 37-year-old chief designer at Fujitsu’s Ubiquitous Solution Design department, was in Singapore last week.
