Boat Registration

Posted by admin

My dad and my husband love to go fishing, even though they don’t get to do it as often as they like. My brother used to go with them before he moved away, and he said he missed the fishing trips most of all. He went out and got his own boat, but forgot to do one very important thing. He forgot that like cars, you have to get boat registration when you want to use a boat in any body of water. You may not if you are on private land, but most will use their boats in water meant for the public.

If you have just gotten a new boat, but you have no idea what to do about boat registration, you can contact your state’s game and boating commission. They can tell you how to get one and how much it will cost. Much like a car, you may also have to have a title for your boat. This might depend on the size of it, and whether or not it has an engine. Those with smaller boats with attachable motors may not have to worry about a title when going in for boat registration, but any other type may very well need to have a title.

Each state has their own set of rules for boat registration, but you may find some things to be the same no matter where you live. When you go in, you must prove ownership of the boat. If you don’t have or need a title, you may have to have a receipt that shows you paid for the boat in full and from whom you bought it. You will have to show that you paid the proper state tax on your boat when you bought it, and you will also have to prove your identity. In many ways, it is much like registering a vehicle, but you should never assume the process is identical. Read up on your state before you go.

The price you will pay for boat registration will also depend on where you live. Most states go by size. The bigger boats have to pay a higher fee for registration. The prices are usually very reasonable, and you can sometimes register your boat for more than one year at a time. Some states ask you to renew your boat registration by mail, and others ask that you appear in person. Even better, you can usually find all of the forms you need for registration online. You can download them and fill them out before you go in to make your trip through so much faster and easier. You’ll be less stressed, and those behind you in line will love you for it.
