Chesapeake Bay Fishing

Posted by admin

Covering parts of Maryland and Virginia, Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. Many people like to charter a boat and explore the waterways of the area and sport fishing is very popular here. Chesapeake Bay fishing offers great fun for fishing enthusiasts, whether novices or more experienced. Common species to catch include rockfish, bluefish, speckled trout, flounder, croaker and spot.

The states of Maryland and Virginia grant permission for Chesapeake Bay fishing with a license and there are regulations to be aware of, on the size and quantity of different species. Many companies in the bay operate charter trips and it’s a good way to indulge in the sport as the boat captains have local knowledge of fish stocks and the best locations to land a catch. The captains provide tackle and bait and have boats equipped with safety features. Some of them will also clean and fillet any fish caught.

The boats have bathroom facilities with hot and cold running water and amenities to make the passenger comfortable. Captains will help in instructing children and beginners on how to use a rod and reel. Passengers are advised to take sunscreen, sunglasses, suitable shoes that will grip the deck, a hat and rain gear. It’s also necessary to take food and drink and a cooler to take the catch home.

The Annapolis Sport Fishing charter operates a 37 foot boat called Dancer and can be boarded at Annapolis Harbor. Dancer is equipped with a refrigerator, sink, ice bucket, video fish finder and chart plotter. Trips are organized for all day, half a day or in the evening. Captain Don is a well known local figure and he runs Chesapeake Bay fishing trips on his 41-foot boat, Lady Luck. The boat goes out from Inner Harbor in Fells Point, Maryland on 3 hour, 6 hour and 8 hour excursions. Fishing for rockfish and bottom fishing are two of the favorite activities. Captain Don also runs ‘crab feast cruises’ and sea duck and Canadian Goose hunts.

The Reel Time is a 33-foot boat, based in the Breezy Point Marina, operated by the Chesapeake Adventures Sportfishing Company. There are different rates for this Chesapeake Bay fishing company, for a full day, half a day and evening bottom fishing. Common catches are sea trout, Spanish mackerel and red fish. Passengers may even catch some of the more sought after species, such as 60 pound bass or 80 pound black drum.
